Is It Time For New Tires

There is a combination of factors to consider when judging if it’s time to replace your tires. While most other parts have a regular mileage-based maintenance schedule, a tire’s lifespan is affected by wear and age.

Is Your Tire Damaged?

Take time to look at your tires every so often. It can sometimes be easy to miss damage caused by running over a screw or hitting a curb. While some punctures to the tire can be easily repaired, a nail in the sidewall of your tire means that the tire will need to be replaced. This part of your tire flexes when absorbing shock, meaning a patch or plug won’t hold for long.

How Deep Is Your Tread?

The tread on each of your tires allows your vehicle to safely grip the road, particularly under poor driving conditions. Check the tread on each of your tires using the old penny trick to see if your tread is worn to the dangerous 2/32” depth threshold. Place the top of the penny into the groove of the tire. If any part of Lincoln’s head is hidden, your treads are ok; but if you can still see the top of his head, you need to replace your tires.

How Old Is Too Old?

Regardless of your tread condition, manufacturers recommend replacing your tires before they reach six years old. The rubber in tires degrades as it ages and is exposed to the elements, increasing the likelihood of a blowout. If your tires look faded or cracked, it’s probably time for a new set.

Can You Replace Just One Tire?

Perhaps you’ve had a blowout and needed to replace that one tire. Depending on your vehicle and on the age and wear of your other tires, you may also need to replace one or more of your other tires. If the tread quality on your tires is drastically different, your vehicle’s drivetrain will be unnecessarily taxed, and your tires will wear out much more quickly.
